ACS has expanded its capabilities to include medical and R&D coating services by implementing technologies and methods designed and perfected by Dr. David Glocker. Much of what we implement has been made possible by Mark Romach, our Engineering / R&D Manager. Romach has spent many years working with Glocker, who is widely recognized for his impressive background in coating technology.
About Dr. David Glocker
Dr. Glocker has worked in the fields of thin film deposition and plasma treatment for over 40 years, in both R&D and manufacturing. His primary technical interests have been the development of high-throughput sputtering processes and the design of sputtering sources.
PVD Coatings & Plasma Modification of Polymers
Prior to founding Isoflux in 1993, he was on the physics faculty of the Rochester Institute of Technology, a project leader with BP America on assignment at the U of R Laser Lab, and a group leader at the Eastman Kodak Company. While at the Eastman Kodak Company, he led a group responsible for research on PVD coatings, surface modification techniques, and coating processes and methods for the plasma modification of polymers. He also supported other worldwide departments within Kodak that were responsible for production vacuum processes, including the PhotoCD™ and Advantix™ film base.
Dr. Glocker is an inventor or co-inventor on over thirty US patents as well as a number of foreign counterparts and is the author of numerous articles and presentations. His publications and patents are primarily in the areas of plasma treatment, vacuum coating equipment design, and vacuum coating processes. He has published more than 30 papers on coating technology and is co-editor of the Handbook of Thin Film Process Technology, a major reference work in the field. He holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics.
Coating with Cylindrical Magnetron Sputtering Cathodes
In 1993, Dave Glocker founded Isoflux Incorporated to manufacture cylindrical magnetron sputtering cathodes and develop coating processes to employ that technology. Due to the unique properties of cylindrical magnetrons, this technology has many advantages including:

- • Ability to coat complex 3D shapes
- • Ability to efficiently coat with precious metals
Coating Solutions for Biomedical
In 2003, Isoflux began to focus on developing novel coating solutions for the biomedical market. This led to the development of a proprietary coating with a unique mixture of flexibility and radiopacity, the VisTa nanostructured tantalum coating. Several medical device manufacturers now use Isoflux cathodes and related patents in both research and manufacturing. While at Isoflux, Glocker held various positions, including President, CEO, and Chief Technology Officer. Now retired from Isoflux, he continues to consult in the industry.
Society of Vacuum Coaters
Dave Glocker has been active in the Society of Vacuum Coaters for a number of years. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary, as well as on the Board’s Executive, Long Range Planning, and Nominating Committees. He was also the chairman of the Education Committee, the Awards Committee, and TAC co-chair for Emerging Technologies and Biomedical Coatings. In 2009 he was honored to receive the SVC’s Nathaniel Sugerman Memorial Award. He has taught various vacuum technology classes for the SVC and other professional organizations, and continues to serve in that capacity.
